(code 24). there is no driver installed but i never use the serial port anyway.

You said that there are no sound devices listed in Device Manager>Sound, video, game controllers. This usually means that no device is connected and since you had sound at one time, there must be a hardware problem. The motherboard probably has onboard sound, so opening the case and re-seating the sound card into the slot isn't an option.
