You will have to use one of the specialized ROMs - Autodroid, USBROM are the primary ones (see XDA). Lollipop allegedly added DAC support in 5.0 but the actual release of 5.0 failed to include it (it worked in the preview). So, it works in the Nexus 7 2013 build but not in 2012 without one of the ROMs I listed above.
