I have captured from my VCR using my TV card and VirtualDub with great success but since I wanted to put the video onto DVD's with menus and such, I decided to use NeroVision. If I use the avi I captured via VirtualDub, I get sound on the final DVD but if I capture through NeroVision directly (which saves time) I don't get sound.

1- I record a program from TV to my hard drive 2- I use NeroVision to cut out the commercials 3- I add chapters and menus 4- I burn the completed project DVD or hard drive 5- only to find out that Nero Smart encoding isn’t so smart and that now the soudtrack is a few seconds out of synch with the video.

From your log file it looks like Nero is trying to encode sound to AC3. I would try to import .wav format or convert mp3 to ac3 using BeSweet with BeLight GUI (both free apps) and import that in the slide show.
