The CD 3.5 has 14 low-noise regulated power supplies on the main board, and one more on the servo control board, which is mounted on the hinged tray. And, as I mentioned earlier, the player can be connected to any of Naim's external power supplies (ranging from the $700 FlatCap to the $4450 SuperCap), which power the analog circuitry separately.

To sum up, the Naim CD 3.5 is a first rate player, fully worthy of the Stereophile Class A rating it held until the introduction of the CD 5 which now enjoys the same honor. It will handle just about anything with musical aplomb, and will handle many things with a quality few other players can match.

This is for the Naim CD3.5 which has had the ALW-Audio super regulator upgrade. This is a considerable upgrade for the 3.5, and leapfrogs the player in terms of sound quality another dimension. Having heard numerous so called high end players, I can only conclude that the CD3.5 is the bargain of the decade. On it's own I was impressed with the CD3.5.

The Naim CD3 is a CD player for people who still aren't thrilled with the sound of CDs. Music flows out and is very smooth. It doesn't have an etched quality to the sound. It's great to compare vinyl vs. CD with the Naim. Finally, I have a CD player that competes with the Townshend turntable.

And in 2000, the CD3-5 was replaced by a thoroughly redesigned model, the CD5—it was still Naim's entry-level player, though by then the price had crept up to $2250. The CD5, too, got a rave in Listener : writing in the January/February 2001 issue, none other than Herb Reichert praised it for making CDs "exciting to listen to," and for being "way more textured …

Back in the day, I much preferred the Rega Planet to the Naim CD3. If I was hankering after an old CD player the Planet would be on the list, such a musical device. For an essentially analogue company, Rega have always made really good sounding digital products !

CD5 - Dials down on some of the forward emphasis of the CD3.5. A touch warmer but still offers up loads of detail. A more refined sound than either of the 3s. For my money the last of the great budget Naim spinners I don't think the 3 series was Naim's best hour, but the CD players stand apart (the NAT03 was a good tuner too). If you have a CD3, that's about £300+ in …
