May 8, 2012. #1. I am currently watching an MKV file of The Girl with the dragon tattoo. The sound is very low, though. At the start of the film, when the music is playing over the credits, the sound is normal, but when the film kicks in, and the actors start to speak, it becomes very quiet, meaning I have to bump up the volume to max to hear it. It is the same on my PC …

A problem ive had and to be fair its happened before the live hub too, is that when I play an MKV, (honestly, I’m not 100% sure if the files in question are 5.1 dts but I guess so) the sound isnt how I want it. for example, dialogue scene are painfully low so I have to turn up my TV. Then an action scene happens and the cones almost blow out the speakers. I’m only connected via HDMI and …

this is a query, and not a real problem. I find that when I play mkv files, the sound is quite low - far lower than avi or mpg files. So low is the sound that at a reasonable listening level, system sounds are exceptionally loud. This means I have to ramp down sound when pausing or similar, and ramp it up again to hear dialog, etc.

If it's been downmixed to a AAC or MP3 aint much you can do. if you have the original audio in AC3 or DTS (like makemkv gives) then you can use eac3to to do the downmixing for you to a 2 channel file with good results. I chose this over the MEGUI or handbrake method for the very same reason. the script I use goes like such:

Open the source file in avidemux. At "audio" (on the left) set it to ac3 or mp3(lame) depending on what you want. In "configure", set the bitrate. In "filters" set mixer to stereo and select "dynamic range compression" (OK out) At the top, audio/save/save your file (eg myfile.mp3) The processing in AVIdemux is quite slow, but the result is good.
