    OK, I solved the problem by rolling back to SP2 and updating the drivers before re-installing SP3. ATI released new drivers end of April 08, in the end I had both audio and display problems! Safe mode was also useful to uninstall the ATI drivers when I had a dead screen in windows due to display driver issues.
