Distressor - Empirical Labs

    https://www.empiricallabs.com/distressor/
The world famous digitally controlled, analog knee compressor by Empirical Labs. Born of founder Dave Derr’s love of classic compressors like the 1176, LA-2A and Gain Brain (among others), the Distressor incorporates his favorite sonic characteristics of these, along with other unique and interesting features that have made it a staple for audio engineers all over the world.

The Distressor was first prototyped back in 1994 and released officially in 1996. It was the first of several pieces of top-end studio gear that was manufactured in Empirical Labs. Derr modeled the Distressor after the favorite parts of the classic 1176 and LA-2A compressors.

The Distressor has two distortion modes that emit a warm, harmonic distortion to the audio signal. The Dist 2 mode enhances the second harmonics, similiar to the saturation of a Class A Tube. The Dist 3 mode features a third harmonic that has the qualities of a Class B tube, or analog tape machine. We often use the Distressor for these modes alone.

The Distressor is a bit more versatile, and it gets you the admiration of any home-studio recordists that happen to see your rig, but the PBC has all the warmth and fatness at half the price. The distortion (including both warm/fat coloration and outright overdrive) is the big difference between these units and the comp in the Marcus preamp.

For what you are describing I'd grab either a mercenary edition drawmer 1968 or if you can afford it, an aurora audio gtc2. The distressor cannot compete with these to comps for what u r doing. This doesn't surprise me.

I find it amazing that mercenary actually posts samples from sessions, of the product in use, before and after with different settings. ... Like, I know whenever I get the money to buy a Distressor when I first use it I will still be surprised by what it actually sounds like in my studio. ... I love it how the FMR Audio website has NOTHING on ...

Need a compressor for bass. DBX 160 now or Distressor ...

Those are both my 2 main bass compressors. The Distressor needs the bass treatment here about 9 times out of 10. If money is tight, I'd get the 160XT now and save up for a Distressor. Once you get the EL8, the 160XT can be used in many other places (specifically drums...) I almost always use the 160xt in "over easy" mode.
