Mednafen Audio Support should default to PulseAudio ...

    https://github.com/mdeguzis/RetroRig/issues/62
The default audio support from mednafen is not supporting PulseAudio and therefor doesn't integrate very well in the Unity desktop. We should find a solution that works out-of the box for all RetroRig users. RetroRig user can then use the Ubuntu build-in audio settings instead of choosing sound cards with alsa-mixer.

General Documentation - Mednafen

Avoid selecting a higher-level sound device that is routed through a sound server like PulseAudio! Mednafen: Select a sound buffer size that is as small as possible without causing excessive crackling or speed issues(20ms should be a fairly safe setting with ALSA on a modern multi-core CPU system).

Yes PulseAudio is used by default by applications, only some allow me to use ALSA, which is shame, music sounds way better in Audacious with ALSA than with Banshee and such.

For anyone with the same problem coming across this post, change in the mednafen.cfg file the sound.device to default and sound.driver to sdl. It looks like my alsa device was using pulseaudio and mednafen doesn't get along with it like the admin said.
