JL Audio also makes an underfloor stealthbox that keeps the spare with 1 10", but I couldn't justify the price. That money was spent on a pretty amazing amp instead. Dantonel, sub's still breaking in but my initial impression reminds me alot of my old JL 12W6 (v1).

I recommend a LOC on the the front speakers, a 3-channel amp (many 4-channel amps will run in 3-channel mode), replace the fronts with a 6.5" component set, and adding a 8-10" sub in a custom enclosure. This should be do-able for well under your $1000 budget.
