You are correct that Marantz speakers do not get much props. I was not impressed with my Imperial 5's (though that is the woofer in my avatar) which were from Marantz' hey day. I can't recall the model you are considering but it is later Marantz. personally I would not go more than $25.

I'm an occasional audiokarma lurker and frequent thrift store scrounger. A few hours ago I ran across a pair of Marantz branded speakers at a thrift store for $15. The label on the back said model SP5 (I think...memory already getting fuzzy). They are large bookshelf speakers, about 18"-24" tall.

Most of these later series Marantz receivers had a "B" designation, i.e.: 2216B. Each model was tuned to sound a bit different. The 2230 has a very tube like sound, as do the Marantz "baby" receivers ... the 2215, 2216, 2216B, and 2220. The XX designation stands for wpc output into 8 ohms across the entire frequency for a period of 60 minutes.
