I want to get surround sound over HDMI. I have a receiver that is capable of transmitting 5.1 surround sound to my speakers, and HDMI video to my projector. I have confirmed that this is possible using alternative hardware (e.g. Windows PC). When I connect my Mac mini to the receiver, I get video to the projector and sound to the speakers.

The OS X Sound pref pane set to HDMI Output (see example below) and Audio/Midi utility configured correctly for multi-channel audio. (I think.) The receiver the mini's HDMI is connected to shows "PCM" during playback and DVD movie (Dolby Digital 5.1) audio seems muffled compared to playing the same DVD in our home dvd player.

The Sony BD player got that and decided, since the projector did not handle sound, it would not send audio over the HDMI output to the projector. We solved that problem by swapping out the Sony BD player for a Panasonic and it works fine. The problem with the Mac Mini is that it is not sending sound out through the HDMI cable.

I am currently using a Mac mini ---> Marantz AV7702 for my surround sound, movies, all channel stereo listening. Its currently connected using a generic HDMI cable. Most often when I listen to 2 channel hi-fi I am running the Mac Mini out USB via a Curious Cable USB to a PS Directstream DAC directly to my Primaluna Dialogue HP.
