It's because of the proprietary FW/MIDI/Audio drivers from M-Audio. This is the main reason I sold mine. If the PMIX is connected to the FW port on your computer, you should see the M-Audio FW control panel in your operating system's system preferences.

Try removing all the software using the Firewire Family uninstall from the start menu, and manually delete the drivers. Do a fresh install with the firewire cable disconnected.
