I use a Keystation 88 (M-Audio) as my primary MIDI keyboard. It has a standard MIDI output and a USB port. I use the USB connection directly to my computer and the MIDI out to chain my external synth/samplers which are connected to the MIDI I/O's of my soundcard. This configuration has worked well for me.
