Not sure of the PreSonus but the M-Audio 410 requires a TI (Texas Instruments) firewire chipset or you will be plauged with static in your recordings. In any event...firewire for $299 = Presonus firebox with Cuebase LE Amazon is selling the M-Audio Audiophile 192 for $129 currently (on special), so that leaves (299-129)=$170 towards buying something like Cubebase SX or Pro Tools (Maudio Protools $250). The 2496 is only $89 at Amazon currently.

I just picked up a Presonus Firebox today after having somewhat nightmarish problems with M-Audio's Firewire 410. I have a brand new (March '08 version) Macbook Pro 15". The Firebox works fine after doing the strange A/C wall trick. So, keep the A/C power plug in before and while booting the laptop.

I tried an M-audio ultra USB on my laptop - couldn't get a big enough buffer to get rid of the pop and clicks. No problem on the quad core Mac, but the Dell XPS 1330 just couldn't do it. Got the Presonus Firebox and now all is good! The laptop runs fine, no latency problems. Go with a firewire box....

The Presonus audiobox is a terrible piece of gear. The headphone quality is horrendously thin. It's been talked about on the Presonus forum and Gearslutz. I bought one from Sweetwater and returned it. For entry level stuff I'd definitely stick with the m-audio fasttrack stuff. I use an m-audio ProFire 610 and it's rock solid.
