That said, how do the 2 stack up, for me size isn't too much of an issue, so the small size of the A2's isn't a distinct advantage to me. I'm kind of leaning towards the A2's just because from the reviews I've read the av40's sound sort of flat.

The audioengine A2's are a fair bit smaller, but does that affect the sound quality in any way compared to the AV40's? I like both of them, but I prefer the A2's based off their size but the price of the M-Audio's are about $50 cheaper here in canada.

The Audioengine A2+ has a -2dB point of 65Hz. The AV40s response is quoted as 85Hz, I assume this is -3dB Neither can do deep bass, the Audioengine has for sure the lowest response. For deep bass with these speakers you will need a subwoofer. Inescapable. Oct 23, 2014 #7 paulguru89 n00b Joined Oct 22, 2014 Messages 39 ok Corsair SP2500 Oct 23, 2014

Likes. 10. It's unfortunate that Swan Speakers (HiVi) doesn't do a better job with their sales and service channels in the US, but I would think the latest Swan M200 MkIII would sound better than anything Audioengine or M-Audio produces in the same price range. I'm not sure why Newegg stopped selling Swan's hi-end multimedia speakers.

You can use a sub with the A2 and AV40. However, you have to use the pre-amp/source to control volume. For example if you're using it with your computer, you have to turn the speakers and sub to max volume and use Windows to control volume.
