    I have a m-audio audiophile 24/96 too and know this problem. The playback and recording (of course in Asio mode, check if you use it!) up to 44,1KHz is ok, but every higher sampling-rate results in crackling! I have a very fast system which should be able to handle even 1MHz sampling-rate. But its an microsoft/m-audio fault - not reapers fault!!!
