Answer: No. Dolby Digital (AC-3) is very efficient, and does a good job of recreating the intended sound, and is capable of 5.1 discreet sound, but it is a lossy compression format. In short, it omits digital information that it deems not as important to make the file smaller. LPCM is …

On the other hand - LPCM is uncompressed and therefore is of equal quality to the source, but it takes up a huge amount of disk space. Again compatibility is good. AC3 or Dolby Digital 5.1 (or 2.0 for that matter) are also compressed formats but at higher bitrates than MPEG Audio. Obviously 5.1 needing more space than a DD 2.0 track (stereo).

Solved: LPCM or Dolby Digital to Sound Bar - Sony

    https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/hi-fi-systems/lpcm-or-dolby-digital-to-sound-bar/td-p/1304842
My understanding of LPCM vs DD is: When set to LPCM the decoding is done directly on the device (ie TV,bluray) then outputted to the AMP-Speakers. When outputting in Bitsteam (ie DD) - the raw audio is outputted to the AMP for decoding then to the speakers. If both devices decode DD, the sound is the same, but on the AMP is shows nicely as DD and not LPCM.

Is PCM Better Or Worse Than Dolby Digital? - AVForums

    https://www.avforums.com/threads/is-pcm-better-or-worse-than-dolby-digital.2281174/
PCM is the originally recorded digital audio (pulse coded modulation) - all A/V audio is PCM to start with, and all A/V audio will end up as PCM before hitting the DAC. Dolby Digital is lossily compressed PCM. It enables more audio to be stored in the same space and more audio to be transmitted across the same bandwidth. However, as said, DD is lossy.
