I had a 2496 and own always the Delta1010 since 7 years. This is not a "lowest latency" card. Don't expect the working with very small ASIO buffer sizes (than you will have crackling). Drivers from M-Audio supporting 32 and 64Bit and the cards are also supported by ALSA (Linux). Good middle-range card.

Same basic card, but works via USB 2.0, and reportedly has slightly better sonics due to being AC powered vs. powered by the computer bus. The Audiophile USB builds on the success of our popular Audiophile 2496—awarded Best Soundcard by Computer Music magazine—delivering 24-bit/96k quality with great dynamic range and noise specs.

In Linux Mint, after installing an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, I expected to see the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard at Menu > Preferences > Sound. The M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard was not showing in Sound. In the Host OS (Windows 7), I updated the driver to the latest driver, version 6.0.8.

The M-Audio 24/96 is a great card and works well with Linux. I am on my second one, having given the first one away with an old computer and regretted it. The sound is excellent and the latencies I get in 64 Studio are very low indeed. Depending on the distro's audio setup, you may need to edit some config files to get it working.

Well, if you don't need midi, the M-Audio Fast Track ($99.00)would give you more bang than the Audiophile 24/96 because it has built in mic pre, line in(for guitar etc.), RCA outs(for speaker or mixer etc.)and headphone out and pretty much negates the need for a mixer for the same price as the Audiophile, but plugs into your USB port instead of ...
