        So Gstreamer apps (Totem) can't play audio via alsa anymore and have to go through jack. And if you are on Ubuntu, you have pulseaudio activated by default, which must either be killed or told to use jack backend too. Next comes Audacity which supports only ALSA and OSS on Linux.

        Linux Sound System Mess. ALSA, OSS, Xine, Phonon, Gstreamer, PulseAudio ... All these jargons of Linux sound architecture are really confusing. Not long ago, I was running KDE applications using aRts layered on ALSA. These days, we have PulseAudio, Phonon & Gstreamer for most of the distributions. All the three systems are horribly broken IMHO.
