Then turn all 4 knobs to 5 and measure between the middle lug and one of the side lugs. If it reads exactly 1/2 (50%) of the total value (between the two outside lugs), then it's a linear taper pot. If it's more like 20% or 80%, it must be …

POTS ???? AUDIO or LINEAR TAPER - The Les Paul Forum

The log pots give you a smoother taper from from 0-5 and quite abrupt changes from 7 - 10. The linear give you more abrupt changes from 0-3 and smoother from 5 - 10. Apparently, Gibson feels the current linear pots are a better match; others feel the log pots are better. I prefer the log pots on a tone control, but can go either way for the volume.

Linear pots will give a true resistance change across the sweep, sitting at 5 will give you 50% of the signal path. Audio pots have a logarithmic sweep, so the actual resistance change has a drastic sweep at the end, but our ears perceve it as a steady smooth change.

    16. Mar 12, 2014. #1. Hello all. I have a Gibson Les Paul in which I recently replaced the 300k linear stock Gibson CTS volume pots for 500k audio Gibson CTS pots. This was mainly done so I could get a better brighter tone from my '57 Classics as I felt the 300k pots were muffling things a little.

When you dial up a linear pot, the signal increases in a very predictable, linear way… At “1”, it gives you 10% of the available signal. At “4”, it gives you 40% of the available signal and at “9”, it gives you 90% of the available signal. An audio taper pot increases the signal logarithmic manner.

The stock (audio taper) pot was only usable from about 0-5 but the linear will be all the way from 0-10. To make it clearer, a linear pot has a smooth, even change in resistance as you turn the knob. 2 will be about 20% of the total resistance, 4 will be 40%, 6 will be 60%, etc.
