He ain’t heavy – the Lavardin IS integrated amplifier By Steve Dickinson T he IS is the entry-level integrated amplifier in Lavardin’s range. Its modest (for a transistor amp) 45W per channel output, four inputs and minimalist styling, means it lacks a certain something, on paper. The dainty, folded aluminium casework and simple

The ASL Leyla is nice, as I love the 845 tube, but the Lavardin is better made, and quieter (no hum). Sim, Edge - they seem to spend a lot of $ on the casework, probably less on the internals. Lavardin seems to be the other way around, and they have been doing it a LOT longer than edge/sim from what I can tell. Worth a listen, IMNSHO.-Ed

Lavardin is dismissive of a lot of modern audio ‘flummery’, however: while I’d normally recommend adding some kind of resonance control pad or block to stop that top plate from clanging like a cracked bell, the company recommends not to experiment with such things, and this is confirmed in the listening.

Lavardin makes a great deal about what it calls ‘Memory Distortion'. This is the idea that electron flow across silicon – used in transistors – leaves a residual path, and that this is the cause of the hardness of solid state, as compared to valve amplifiers. Lavardin has come up with some circuitry that the company claims gets around ...

Launched at the very beginning of Lavardin's existence, it has undergone only minor cosmetic changes since. One of those came about in 2003 as a new knob color. The one in 2005 was more significant. The input circuitry saw certain changes and they added a tape out. These modifications were called 2K5.
