I did some tests with a 5.1 source upmixing it to 7.1 with Lav. Lav just moves the Back L/R channels to Side L/R. Disabled some of the options on LAV audio font panel, the ones related to surround sound, did not change anything. Also tried the options on the Mixing panel, still same. FFaudio does not move them at all.

In the lav audio decoder properties, it lets you select the bit depth format for output, 8-bit int, 16 bit int, 24 bit int, 32 bit int and fp. I want to check mark 32-bit integer as it should be the best, however my audio receiver only supports playback of files up to 24/192.

Then either the audio renderer or audio driver/Windows will do the down-mixing to stereo (if your system is stereo). Since one of them has to do it anyways I would enable it. It is known to work well, you can't always be sure with all the audio renderers and audio drivers floating around. If you don't tick "enable mixing" LAV audio will output ...

On the left click "Mixer". On the right: Check "Mixer". Set the "Output speaker configuration" as desired. "3/0/2 - 5 Channels" and checking "LFE" will give you DD5.1. "3/2/1 - 6 Channels" with LFE is DD6.1 EX "3/2/2 - 7 Channels" with LFE is DD7.1 EX You get the idea. You can go lower, or have no LFE as desired.

MPC-BE / Tickets / #658 MPC Audio Renderer - Incorrectly ...

    https://sourceforge.net/p/mpcbe/tickets/658/
Private: No. I'm playing an AAC 2.0-channel 44100 Hz file on a 7.1-channel 48000 Hz speaker layout. MPC Audio Renderer incorrectly outputs 7.1 channels and "upmixes" the audio. LAV Audio Decoder outputs only 2 channels, and the input to MPC Audio Renderer is also 2 channels. I've attached a screenshot of LAV Audio Decoder and MPC Audio Renderer.
