If you like the idea of older and big powerful amps, on US Audio Mart, there is a fella in the Santa Clara area (CA) selling a pair of Audio Research Ref 600 Mk IIIs in a black finish for $10,000 bucks I think. That would probably mate up nicely to your ARC 5SE preamp. When it comes to audio gear, if I can't move it myself, I don't buy it.

Advice on Krell amplifier. I am planning to replace my 20 plus year old Audio Research amplifier with a solid state one (tired of dealing with tubes). I’m considering the McIntosh Mc312 and the Krell duo 175xd. The Krell is highly recommended by a trusted dealer as having a “tube like” sound and going well with my other components.

I bought a used Krell HTS 7.1 preamp/processor. I use it with an OPPO blu-ray disc player (BDP-83). The sound is magnificent. Because there is no HDMI option on the Krell (older technology) each of the 7 outputs from the OPPO need to use individual audio cables. That works for DVDs except when the movie is coded for 5.1.

In my view; Audio Research Reference 3 or 5 or SP25, Conrad Johnson 18LS, Act or Act 2, Pass Labs X0 or X1, Krell KCT or DNM 3c/d SIX. I would go for a valve job personally, as it balances the rather dark and monitor quality of Krell FPB.
