I have an original JL 12W6 subwoofer. It is presently in a bandpass enclosure that I built a couple years ago with specs from JL audio. Question is would the sub work better in a ported enclosure? Would it be louder and sound better? If so how big should I make the box and to what frequency...

So JL gave u specs to put a W7 in a bandpass?? Hmm and on top of that a 1.5:1 ratio?? This should be interesting I spoke to JL Audio 2 different times about this. I originally designed it to be 1:2 and making the sealed side larger, but JL told me not to. And they gave me the specs to build to. I just designed it to fit in Jordan's BMW.

JL Audio's site doesn't list a bandpass design within their description, sealed and ported yes. ... I'd be happy to model a few enclosures for you and give you their specs (chamber volumes and port sizes), but giving full dimensions is a PITA to be honest, plus I don't know your physical limitations in the trunk. ...

Your woofer likes 1.875 cubic ft sealed . The resonant frequency of that box is 40.5 hz. Which is pretty low for a sealed box. So if you want to make the ported section of your band pass box tuned to around 41 hz or so you'd probably have pretty decent sound quality. How big your ported section of the band pass box depends on your available space.
