However this is not working and I am not sure if I am missing a step or away of pointing DS Audio to the playlists. Anyone tried to do similar and had this issue and overcome it?

It is possible to do what you are attempting to do. I have a similar setup using DS audio and iTunes sharing the same audio files stored on the NAS for their libraries. You will need to move the media to the NAS (or connect your external drive to it) and point the iTunes media folder (change in preferences) to the share where you put the media.

Audio Station is a Synology specific application and works with their DS Audio app. To preserve your current means of use, you'll have to keep iTunes running. Audio Station appears to support playing to Airplay devices.... Audio Station does airplay. iTunes Server lets you access your library stored on the NAS via the network function in iTunes.
