The microphone preamp on the Fast Track is not very good, and the knob on the front is not very well made. This whole interface is very cheap feeling and light but it will give you a decent recording quality. It also comes with Pro Tools SE which is a basic version of Pro Tools but it still has a lot of VST instruments that comes with it.

The M-Audio Nova is a condenser microphone, and thus requires phantom power to be on. The M-Audio Fast Track has a preamp built in, so the seller was correct that it doesn't require an external preamp. When you sing/speak into the microphone, does the green "sig" light come on? Does the red "clip" light come on if you turn up the gain and/or yell?
