Go to System Preferences +CDs & DVDs+ pane. Change +When you insert a video DVD+ to Ignore. Then, insert a video DVD and see if it gets mounted to the Desktop but otherwise gets ignored (but does not get ejected). If that works, your problem may be fixed. Change it back to *Open DVD Player* or whatever setting you want, and it will probably work.

Make sure the disc is correctly placed in the drive. See if the disc is dirty or damaged. The easiest way to do this is to try it in another computer with a compatible drive. If it's an audio CD or a video DVD, you might also try it in a CD or DVD player. If you suspect your disc is dirty, clean it with a soft, damp cloth.

The drives in iMacs, Macbooks and most laptops from other manufacturers are designed for small size, not durability. It can be replaced but as Tan43 suggests, a better, cheaper alternative is to get an external drive, especially with an iMac where portability isn't an issue.
