iMac Line-Input for audio. I've noticed my 2017 iMac doesn't have a line-in for audio. I've read I can use the headset jack as a line-in for the audio by changing the settings on the sound input, but the only option available is the built in microphone. The 3.5mm Audio Input Jack requires an amplified Line-Level input device. To use a non-amplified PC microphone with an iMac, you will need to use either a pre-amp or something like a Griffin iMic . You may also be able to patch the microphone thru a stereo receiver or tape player providing that the tape player has Line-Level output.

There are lots of USB audio interfaces, some no more expensive and rated higher than the Griffin. But my previous iMac worked perfectly with running a straight audio cable from my regular Onkyo (no USB) to that audio input. And a patch cord between that port and the headphones out assured capture of any audio from the computer.
