I ended up hunting down v. 6.10.6491.0 [08/16/2013] of the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver and installed that. All is fine now (no clean install of Windows or anything else needed). The download file for the driver is SP66216.exe. It used to be available via FTP from the HP site, but no longer appears to be.
