I've been trying to buy a ready-made or self assembled HTPC with an integrated 5.1 amplifier and HDMI output. Why? Because I already have a cable box, PS3 and DVD Receiver under my TV and now I'm looking to be able to add a PC for Internet surfing, playing Mp3's, downloaded videos and digital photos.

If you decide to get into the real world and purchase a decent AVR or prepro/amp with passive speakers, you want to attach your HTPC via HDMI. This way, you won't use a sound card on your HTPC. I built my current one in 2017 and it is still going strong.

Well, I guess I didn't mention that I've been using an HTPC for several years now. I'm sure that the sound card signal level is strong enough to drive your amp. It's essentially the same as setting the preamp's volume to 0dB (no gain, no attenuation, if they implemented it right).

for your htpc all you need is a ati 4550 ($100) and a denon AVR-1909 (~1000) and you can pass full 7.1 audio codecs to the amp which can decode them or you can use a sound card setup (asus xonar for example) which can do 7.1 analoge and pass it to an amp ($350) imo the easiest solution would be the first one by far, alot less fucking around

Digital Class D amplifiers are much more efficient (90% or more) than analog Class A/B amplifiers (about 50% efficient). As such, digital amps tend to run much cooler and therefore do not require the heavy heat sinks associated with high-powered analog …
