Stormy pointed me in the right direction with his clue "Audio- 7.1 CH Windows® Vista™ Premium Level HD Audio (VIA® VT1708S Audio Codec)". I looked at the mobo spec and indeed it was this audio codec and no the realtek one. I can now see my playback devices.
