I went to System Settings, and then to Sound, selected the HDMI sound option. Now, whenever I play anything that has sound, the audio has static and crackling. It does not play correctly. If running audio ON the HDMI, are you sure it's an adequate cable in good working condition, and do you have the latest HDMI audio driver installed? If you cannot get the HDMI audio to work, or work without problems, which is not uncommon, you can go the aforementioned route of using an accessory optical or coaxial audio cable.

I used the HDMI cable supplied with the DVD player and hooked it up along with the RCA audio cables. (The manual recommended not using the yellow video cable.) However, with this setup, I get static. I have tried a variety of HDMI cables now, different raspberry pi4 chips, and cases all of which exhibit the same symptom initially described. I now have an argonone m.2 case which uses a full HDMI cable and still get the random static noises. Not sure what else to try or troubleshoot for root cause here.

Are you using HDMI audio or R&W stereo audio with the HDMI1 port? HDMI audio- it's the only cord coming out from the PS3 (other than the power cord) BTW- The static looks different than static of an analog TV, the static looks "high def" if that makes any sense...
