Having used a 4850 for sound over HDMI, it depends a little on whether you're using XP or Vista. XP will require you to download a separate driver for HDMI audio on the ATI website, it's not part of the XP CCC download. Vista's driver includes this driver.

The receiver shows no sound detected, and my PC was still using the X-Fi, and not the onboard HDMI audio. I'm using the HDMI audio drivers that came with Catalyst 8.10 Hotfix2. I do get 1080p video though. When I tried hooking my PC up directly to one of the TV's HDMI input ports, I do get both 1080p picture and sound.
