My problem was the hdmi lead, but guess the hdmi/dvi converter could also be the issue. very weird. from boot up to windows start screen, the secondary display would work fine using the broken hdmi cable. As soon as windows had loaded, the sony tv went black. I could also get the secondary display working when in safe mode.

The DVI -> HDMI cable is not designed to carry audio. The DVI spec doesn't cater for it.
