However, the ES57 mic has become my go to instrument mic when recording live bands and events. It lessens my chance of heart failure if one goes missing or gets destroyed. We tested this 57 and also the 58 against a much more expensive Shure Beta 58 (one step above the SM58 ). We had the Shure mics set up in the same way as the GLS mics and we preferred the GLS takes every time. The GLS mics are a touch more sensitive so they require less gain resulting in less noisy recordings.

The ES57 is a neodymium magnet, which actually makes it closer in sound to a Beta 57 than a SM57 I'm told. (Never had a beta side by side with the ES.) The ES57 I find to be smoother sounding, and doesn't have the high-mid resonant peak as pronounced as a SM57. Overall, I seriously think they're about equal quality soundwise, just different.
