After research I found this GefenTV DAC received a majority of good reviews. Amazon, as usual, provided fast shipment and good service. However, when received and placed in service, I found that Panasonic neglected to tell me that the volume was fixed when using the digital optical out, which negated the purpose of use with headphones.

The GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder set up quickly and is performing as hoped, so now I can pump sound from the TV, Blu-ray player, media server and internet apps through the house again. I believe it's even working with the early Dolby version in the receiver! Since this is the first day, I'll update the review if things turn sour.

With the Gefen Digital converter, the sub-woofer worked. That should be a qualified "worked". When the HDTV was on broadcast or cable, the sound system worked perfectly and I have no complaints. However, when I used my Blu-ray player, the sound cut out and produced pops and crackles. This is the primary reason I returned the unit.
