Try saving your fsx.cfg to another name (fsx.old works), restarting FSX and letting it build a new fsx.cfg file. That should reset all your FSX sound settings and the referenced sound device (s) to defaults. The same problem exists in fsx with the default 747-400. It's sound set is an alias of the 737-800 and here exists another problem. The 737 works perfectly but the 747 does not. The 747 is a 4 engine a/c but is using the sound cfg of a 2 engine a/c. Whilst it is largely ok to do this, it does seem to also create the outside view sound problem.

If your having problems keeping the ATC sound volumes stable with FSX Windows 7, try this. It worked for me. Open Control Panel/Sound/Communications, Choose the "Do Nothing" option then Apply. I guess it's reading the ATC as a phone transmission. That didnt work. Its not the sound volumes. Its that the sound 'transfers' to my built-in speakers

The "Sound off" text in the top of the fsx window disappears but still no sound. I end the flight and find out that even FSX menu music and UI sounds are all gone.
