So My new 460 looks like a tall 435/neumann style, and my 435 now looks like a stubby 460/c12 style mic. they both sound good, but the 460 with the new more open and less reflective grill and without that nasty c12/460 metal band in front of the capsule really is much smoother sounding. Amazing how much different that made.

Having said this my preference is to have the microphone reproduce as much of the low end as possible. The basic front end of the 460 is like the ELAM 251 but with the more elegant 9 pattern selection switch circuit. The tube should be a 6072a but to keep the price down for APEX and NADY the Chinese factory installed a $1.30 12AX7.

The Apex 460 is manufactured offshore to meet an aggressive price point. Its sound is necessarily compromised. In a sense, you get a lot for the ~$190-$250 that you spend -- multiple patterns, shockmount, tube mic -- but honestly this is not a great-sounding microphone.
