The II is lot easy to dial in and much better for getting in-the-room amp tones. For playing live, the II gets you much closer to the sound of a real amp -- the Ultra sounds great, but does not sound as much like an amp. (This not necessarily a bad thing.

Finally, the Ares 2.x firmware port for the Axe II is very good, so you definitely need the Axe II is you want to use the best amp modeling which has for most usage replaced my tube gear (and I'm a tube snob of the highest order!), which on a Axe II lives on it's own CPU (so it doesn't effect FX power), where on a Ultra it shares CPU's with the FX (so it lowers your FX …

+1 If you are only using DSP for effects maybe the Ultra keeps up, I don't know. I use only the Axe-FX (no amp) and when I replaced my Ultra with a II it was in fact night and day and that was FW 7. Now we are on FW 16.02 and the II blows the Ultra out of the water completely tone-wise, no comparison.

A lot has happened since the Axe-Fx II was release when most people compared it to the Standard and Ultra. I think back then the difference wasn't all that dramatic but now I think it would be. But that doesn't mean that the Ultra sounds bad, it's just less real and a more studio-like, processed sound.

Sep 2, 2011. #9. Matt Jones said: No. It seems that when people ask for the sonic differences from generation 1 & 2 units they tend to want to know the difference between the Ultra and Axe II. My point is that the Ultra and Standard *sound* exactly the same. The Ultra simply has more processing power to run more instances of effects along with ...

About the Ultra Model The Axe-Fx UltraTM is a “souped-up” version of the Axe-Fx. All the same great sounds but with a faster DSP and more memory. The Ultra TM contains a large selection of effects and sub-algorithms not present in the regular Axe-Fx and is geared toward serious studio and live use. The Ultra is

This is the first product I've tried from Fractal Audio Systems, and it's one of a pair of guitar amp and effect simulators built by the company. The Axe‑FX Ultra and standard Axe‑FX are similar but the former, reviewed here, has a faster processor and more memory, which equates to the ability to run more effect models at the same time. The Ultra also includes additional effect …
