Forte Model 4 Amplifier review, test, price

The Forte Model 4 is a Class-A power amplifier costing $1,795-unusually low for a Class-A design. At a given price point, true Class-A operation inevitably sacrifices power relative to Class-AB operation, and it is interesting to note that the Class …

The Model 4a has all the drive of the T100, the sonic elegance and delivery of the T200, without the cosmetics. They do get warm, but not hot. Ventilation of ANY Class A amplifier is a given. The 4a bests the Coda 10.5 in both sonics and power, and sonic equivalent of the 11.5.

The Forte Model 4a is clearly a gotta have amplifier. It is 50 Watts RMS per side in Pure Class A configuration. Forte was the sister line to Threshold and with that being said much of the Threshold technology found it's way into the Forte product line. Forte Audio was an offshoot of Threshold in the Nelson Pass days there. The Model 6 and Model 4 power amps were identical component wise, differing only in configuration. The 6 ran a high rail voltage and was lower biased into A/B operation whereas the model 4 ran a lower rail voltage but was biased into Class A operation.

Threshold and Forte began using IGBT, insulated gate biploar transistors, and the model 4, as well as the model 6 if I am not mistaken, were born. The Model 4 being the 50 watt per channel class A amplifier and the Model 6 being the 150 watt class AB amplifier. I am familiar because I owned a Forte Model 4 amplifier sometime around 1993.
