When Avid reaches 'Initialize audio' in the loading screen I get the error message "Exception: Failed to initialize audio hardware". I have tried changing the audio settings in my BIOS from 'auto' to 'AC97' however this simply stops the sound card from working (which means avid runs, but without sound!).

If your system came from a qualified Avid dealer make him fix it. Didn’t think it did :-D, so… make sure the SB card is set as the preferred playback/record device. And check the bios to make sure no onboard audio cards are enabled. You may also be able to disable onbaoard cards within “Device Manager”.
