    thank you Sukie - I found an easy solution for Mac users, I just didn't think of this earlier: Keynote from Apple will open the 40 MB .pptx, play the audio normally (unlike ppt where one has to always listen to the whole audio), and also export a 250 MB movie in a minute. Handbrake will then convert it to a nice 40 MB .mp4 movie with H264.
