Ease of use, handy controls, audio quality, price. I tend to really dislike the Elecraft every knob or button does 6 things method. Elecraft makes great portable efficient stuff, or stuff you can build, but its expensive and not as easy to use as other rigs. The Icom 7300 would likely be a much better buy for most people.

flat receive equalization. The audio indeed could be classified as "muffled". Furthermore, it also. sounded distorted, as thought the microphone gain was set too high. Oddly, it was distorted independently of the gain setting. I have not had a voice QSO on the K3 since that moment. The K3 transmit. audio, at least on 40 meter LSB, was horrid.

For the first time in a very long time, my radio shack is without an Elecraft product. I was and still am a big Elecraft fan and had 2 Elecraft K2's that I built, KX1, K3 and finally a KX3. The only rig I had left was the KX3 and a short time ago that rig was sold off. As with most hams sold equipment becomes ham bucks for new things.

IMHO, the sub-par receive audio rap for the K3 has been undeservedly carried forward from the earliest days of the K3. Elecraft made some changes early on (first year of production) that fixed the issues. There is a 4KHz low pass audio filter permanently in-line, so don't expect to get wider rx audio, even with the 13KHz filter.
