Echo Audio has a reputation for writing some fine drivers and their Mac support seems first rate. This is difficult to evaluate, but it seems Echo has incorporated decent mic pres and does a respectable A/D conversion in the Audiofire range o' products. Apogee has a great reputation and the Duet obviously integrates well with Garageband and Logic.

And, for the record, I'll be using an Echo AudioFire 12 within the next 2 weeks just for the sole purpose of judging their quality. I'm willing to bet you money that the difference between it and my higher end converters (Mytek (with a 'k', not a 'c') and Benchmark) as well as my RMEs is again subjective and barely the 5-10% referenced ...

2.My other option was to get an Apogee One and the M179 and maybe a cheap preamp such as the Golden Age Pre 73 or the EH 12ay7. How big a difference in preamps and conversion between the One and the Duet? I have heard people record some great things with this thing. 3.The final option would be the Echo Audiofire 8 and the CAD M179.

Anyone here using this little usb 2.0 unit? The UX-8 uses the same converter chip that the Apogee Ensemble ($1949), Echo Audiofire 12 ($699), Focusrite Saffire Pro ($699) and others I wanted Apogee but they only want to support the Birkenstock format. I picked one of these up used for $300 in an SKB case..
