Dynaudio BM5A - Sound on Sound

With the BM5A, Dynaudio have gone for a simple, clean, engineered style that to my mind dovetails well with the market sector the product is aimed at. There's a no-nonsense, serious look to the BM5A that comes from it's heavily engineered and aluminium-look driver chassis, deep cabinet proportions, and semi-gloss lacquered front panel.

Dynaudio BM5A are fantastic powered monitors. I am using them as music (as opposed to studio) monitors, playing music from computer. Very clean and detailed sound in nearfield. However, BM5A do need sub if used for actual music playback and not as studio monitors.

Dynaudio BM5A MkII - Sound On Sound

    https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/dynaudio-bm5a-mkii
Reviewing that model back in SOS June 2005 ( /sos/jun05/articles/dynaudiobm5.htm ), Phil Ward was enthusiastic: "The BM5A is a high‑quality professional product that is unlikely to disappoint. Worth the extra expenditure compared with apparently similar entry‑level products.”

I'm going to review the Dynaudio BM5A near-field reference monitors, a high-performance active near-field monitor that was designed for recording/mixing environments where space is a constraint. However, this does not preclude the possibility of the BM5A being used in a more professional recording/mixing environment.

The Dynaudios image at least as well but do not have the deep bass of the B&Ws or Kefs. The midrange was more revealing than any speaker that I’ve ever owned. This may be due to the BM5As being designed for use as studio monitors. 50 watts may seem a bit modest in these days of 500 watt monoblocks, but I never lacked power or volume.

The monitor is well suited for music monitoring and mixing, broadcast mixing, edit suites, playback suites, project studios and smaller post production facilities.

Dynaudio BM5 MKIII Review | HiFiReport.com

    https://www.hifireport.com/dynaudio-bm5-mkiii-review/
Overall, the BM5 MKIII is a small 7-inch monitor speaker with a stable and reliable sound style. The low frequency is abundant, the middle frequency is thick, and the high frequency is stable. That is also the characteristic of Dynaudio’s traditional mid-woofer.

Objectively, the Dynaudio LYD 5 does well with near flat frequency response, good directivity and great control of low frequency distortion. Where it misses is in lower bass energy which it attempts to make up for by boosting the upper bass. This is a fine trick in low end budget speakers but for a monitor, I don't think it is a good trade off.
