18,593. Location: northern cal. If I remember right when building my ST-70, the feedback circuit was tied into the 16 ohm tap. So it will take a bit of math to figure it out for the 8 ohm tap on the new OPT's. Lavane, Wednesday at 1:30 PM.

For the heck of it you could use a 5U4 tube in the ST-70. Uses 5 watts more for the filament, and will drop some B+, but is okay to use. I have no idea if you'd hear a drop in sonic performance, but easy to find out. tubino, Nov 27, 2004. #4.

The power transformer in the ST-70 can handle a 5U4 tube (3 amp filament) so using a 5R4 with the additional 1/10th of a amp for the filament won't hurt it. Using the 5R4 will cause the B+ to be a little lower, I don't have the output current ratings on hand but that may be an issue if it is less than the 5AR4.

A properly-working ST-70 is actually a respectable amplifier. They have distortion figures that gave their competition conniptions back in the day (Hafler was an excellent designer) and so rival much more revered amps like the Marantz 7B.

The Dynaco ST-70 surely must represent the greatest amplification paradox of all time: It was arguably the best selling power amplifier of all time, and is arguably the most maligned such device as well. For a generation who adored it, there have been those in following generations who are quite vocal about it, to the point that the only
