My bionic had this problem, turned out to be lint inside the jack. I removed it gently with a tiny paperclip, then blew it out with compressed air. Shine a light down there before and after. Funny, someone else just asked this in the bionic forum. Hope that's it, good luck.

Helped, but not 100% fixed. I consider this (How can I repair the headphone jack? - Motorola Droid - iFixit) (scroll down to MishyTOO's fix and those like it below his/hers), but there is no gap between the jack and my case on this Bionic (bought in March 2012). I guess I'll have to keep cleaning it.

Another problem might also be with the jack itself. If the contacts are dirty it might not reconnect. You could get a small swab (I don't think regular q-tips fit, ad they'd have a tendency to leave cotton fibers behind, which wouldn't be good) and trey cleaning it with a LITTLE alcohol, while the phone is OFF.
