Man, I hope some one has an idea. I have Windows Vista 64, Sound Blaster with fully updated drivers. All audio is working for all other installed Steam games. So, I do know, for a fact, the sound problem is exclusive to Doom 3 BFG. Game runs perfect otherwise. I have googled sound issues, but not getting anything.

Strange one here. I got the BFG edition of doom here on gog, and it works just fine on my Linux mint 19 setup. All except for the sound in Doom 3. The other 2 included Doom games are fine. They have sound, play and don't crash or anything. Neither does Doom 3, it just doesn't have any sound whatsoever. Running latest stable wine version.
