Only certain Macs can output audio through the mini display port. Those that can't will need to have auxiliary speakers connected to the 3.5mm audio jack or other solution through a separate cable system. Mid 2010 or later MacBook Pros support audio through the port. Late 2009 or later iMacs also support it.

I have last years MacBook Pro, and was told that the mini display port only supports output to video, no audio whatsoever, not even HDMI. What a waste. Instead you have to use a cable from the headphone jack to make the sound work.
