Yet another relay attenuator | diyAudio

Inspired by the ftorres' nice balanced preamp, and slightly turned off by the design decisions made by the Dip Chip folks, I decided to make my own relay attenuator. Using the ftorres' schematic as a starting point, I created a balanced stereo attenuator with 20K input impedance and 64 levels, in 1.25dB steps.

However, relay attenuators do have a couple of advantages, among which that they can be built for a reasonable cost. A stepped attenuator also has very good channel matching, but whereas even the expensive DACT only gets you 24 steps, typically with 2dB between them, 128 or even 256 steps of 0.5dB each are quite easily achieved with relays.

Audio Volume Relay Attenuator with IR Control

Audio Volume Relay Attenuator with IR Control. This page refers to an old project. Recently I made a new attenuator design, which is now available! This page shows my audio volume control circuit and implementation. The circuit provides both audio volume and input channel selection.

The relay-switched attenuator volume control

    https://soundmovements.co.uk/diyaudio/Attenuator.html
The relay-switched attenuator volume control. Background. For many years I've been thinking about the best way to control the volume in a remote-controlled preamplifier with the minimum loss of transparency, and I decided long ago that the a relay-switched attenuator was the ultimate solution. In fact I put together a couple of PCBs with 30-step (2dB) attenuators nearly fifteen …
